Yesterday, the first book in my new dark contemporary reverse harem series released. Steps begins the Finding Their Muse trilogy and has been a joy to write, in the most delicious dark, angsty way. In this book I've let out my inner dark and rather enjoyed myself!
The idea for the series took me by complete surprise. I was listening to music on You Tube whilst writing one of my Fern books from the Sisters of Hex series, and was struck dumb by the music video for Take Me To Church by Hozier, featuring Sergei Polunin.
My first reaction was 'holy shit' followed by 'god this man can move' to 'I'm in love' and finally settling on 'I have the best idea for a story'. Inspiration was instantaneous and had to drop what I was writing and briefly outline an idea for a story. From this one video, Ivan Sachov was born and Rose, alongside the other men of Browlace Manor began to form.
Watch the video that inspired me here:
You have to agree that Sergei is utterly spellbinding. In Steps, I hope I've captured just some of the passion and angst displayed here.
It's funny, I was utterly paranoid that this story wasn't 'dark enough'. I'm well aware of what readers of this genre expect, and I didn't know whether I'd gone hit the mark. When I worried and fretted to one of my Beta readers she was able to reassure me that I'd made it pretty 'f$%king dark' , and actually I realised that through all my books I've written there is always a thread of dark, it's just amplified in this one. Not sure what that says about me though!
Here are some of the comments I've had so far:
"This has got to be one of my all time favorite book from Bea Paige. This book is so beautifully dark with an intriguing story line. The intense emotions, the heartbreaking pain and the mentally complicated characters. "
"Holy wow! The cover is stunning, the writing enthralling and dark, and the characters are unforgettable, addicting and bury themselves in your heart. Bea Paige has outdone herself with this dark and and heartbreaking story of three broken men and the woman that is unknowingly strong enough to build them back into the men they once were."
"I can tell you she hit it out of the freakin park!! I was mesmerized the entire time, the story, characters, budding relationships drew you in and wouldn't let you go."
"This book was freaking awesome!
This story dragged me in after reading the first two paragraphs and I couldn’t climb out until I had gotten to the end of the book."
"This is an Absolutely powerful story! I found myself at times holding my breath, the intensity of the story literally stealing my breath away...I have no words to describe how much this story affected me. "
"This is a dark, disturbing book, full of pain. Damaged men who want to control, to harm, to destroy women. I was haunted by each page. I am not usually drawn to the darker human elements but I am drawn to the broken."
Steps, so far has exceeded my expectations. I really, honestly, didn't know how it would be received but as of today (19th November) it's managed to get into the top #500 in both Canada and Australia stores. When I went to bed last night it was in the top #1500 in the US store and around #2000k mark in the UK store. I'm trying not to stalk the rankings and get on with book two - Strokes which will revolve around Anton and Rose predominantly. This book is set to get very dark.... perhaps Black hole or at least Midnight... so watch this space. If you want to read Steps click HERE and you'll be whisked off to relevant Amazon store.
